Q: Can I use my computer for both the business and the Internet?
A: Yes. However, we strongly advise against it, unless you are confident that an impenetrable firewall as well as solid anti-virus and anti-spyware protection was put in place when your computer was installed.

Q: What is a firewall?
There are two types of firewalls. One is software generated.
Microsoft provides for free a firewall built into Windows XP and
Windows Visa. The other is controlled by a router or gateway
which would be installed between your Cable Modem and PC.
Today DSL Routers have a firewall facility built-in, so you would
not need another router to go between that and your system. In either case, you should be able turn the firewall on and off, as well as decide what can and can not get through. A firewall prevents "hackers" and undesirables from accessing your computer without your authorization. You should always contact a qualified, licensed technician to install such a device to prevent accidental damage to your Internet connection and/or PC.

Q: What is a virus and how does my computer get infected with one?
A: A virus is a program and/or string of codes that violates or compromises software, the operating system and performance of your PC. Left undetected it can do damage, at times requiring complete re-partition and re-format of the hard drive. It hides itself inside downloads, Internet Urls and other links. Microsoft does not provide a free anti-virus program with their operating systems. It is strongly recommended you install one that will provide the best protection. Here again, you might want to consult an expert before data is lost.

Q: What is spyware and adware?
A: Spyware is similar to a virus, but instead it is intended for the intruder to access your PC and be able to look at your data, banking and personal information. In a sense, it allows the violator to "spy" on you. This can lead to identity theft where someone impersonates you to steal money or merchandise. Adware attacks your computer for the sake of bombarding it with "popups" and unsolicited advertising. Seek the proper software to address both potential problems, or an expert in the field to establish the proper security.
